Let's make something new together.

Excellent art. Authentic faith. Forefront Festival is back for another vibrant festival at the intersection of Christianity and creativity.

Join us on February 19, 2022 at Browncroft Community Church in Rochester, NY.

Is Forefront Festival for you? The answer is probably yes! Forefront is not just for "artists." It's for anyone who loves good music, movies, or art, or wants to use their creativity to serve God. We've had stay-at-home moms, teachers, and engineers love Forefront events, in addition to the people you'd expect (musicians, photographers, etc). All are welcome.

Meet fellow creators.

Whether you consider yourself an "artist," an enthusiast, or just someone who casually enjoys beautiful things, you'll be in good company at Forefront events.

Learn something new.

Sessions include an opening keynote, an on-stage interview, and interactive breakouts — all led by talented Christian creators in a variety of fields.

Enjoy food & drink.

Dinner will be available from one of Rochester's amazing food trucks — because we know fellowship is best when paired with food. Plus, get coffee from New City Cafe right in the dining area.

Experience music.

Several musicians will be playing throughout the event, and acclaimed singer/songwriter Joy Ike will perform at the end.

Featured Artists

Joy Ike

Joy Ike is a full-time singer-songwriter and artist coach based out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Polished and precise, yet buoyed with an airy grace, Joy Ike paints with a broad palette that defies easy categorization. Born to Nigerian immigrants, the singer/songwriter’s music, voice, and writing have drawn comparisons to female musicians such as Nina Simone, Laura Nyro, and Regina Spektor. But her percussive piano-playing and soaring vocals give homage to her African upbringing.

As a singer/songwriter/storyteller, artist and public speaker, Joy believes that music and art have the power to transform hearts and connect people who would otherwise be strangers at best and enemies at worst.  As an artist coach and former publicist, she teaches workshops on branding, marketing, and using your authentic story to engage your audience. Joy is passionate about art as a vehicle for change, empowerment and empathy and sees art as a way to openly and thoughtfully wrestle with the uncertainty of life.

Rev. Dr. David Kim (Keynote Speaker)

David Kim is the CEO and co-founder of Goldenwood. Over the past several decades, Rev. Dr. David Kim has trained, consulted, and counseled hundreds of leaders and organizations in developing a robust, meaningful integration of faith and work. David’s past experiences as VP of Faith and Work, Executive Director of the Center for Faith & Work, Director of the Gotham Fellowship, and editor of the NIV Faith and Work Bible have given him a breadth of exposure to the challenges of integrating faith and work. His expertise as a key thought-leader in the faith and work space has been well-established having addressed prominent institutions and churches around the world. David continues to pioneer effective means by which individuals and organizations can grow towards a dynamic lived spirituality that expresses God’s glory into the world.

Brian Ferris

Brian is a marketing professional by day, and a painter and an actor by night. He grew up in a small town outside of Cleveland, and after graduating from Grove City College in 2019, he got married and currently lives in Pittsburgh, PA.

Throughout his time at college, Brian focused his creative talents in theater, where he spent a majority of his time acting. He received the Dr. James Dixon Scholarship in Theatre and Shakespeare and was selected twice by the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF) to compete in the Irene Ryan acting competition.

When opportunities in theater disappeared due to the pandemic, Brian pursued a new creative outlet in painting. His paintings can be categorized as Emotional or Intuitional Abstract, often featuring a black square with layers of paint applied and removed, leaving behind a canvas that has been washed and renewed with color. Brian finds that his best work is created while meditating on God's mysteries, and when his hands are moving as a response to the canvas and the Creator.

Josh Tiessen

Born in 1995 in Moscow, Russia, Josh Tiessen is an international award-winning artist based near Toronto, Ontario, Canada, He was listed as one of the world’s top ten prodigy artists (Huffington Post) and recognized as the only known male art prodigy in North America (Dr. J. Ruthsatz, international child prodigy expert). His hyperreal shaped oil paintings, which take up to 1700 hours to complete, reflect the interaction between the natural world and human-made structures, drawing upon his studies in philosophy, theology and intercultural aesthetics.

Mentored by masters such as acclaimed Canadian wildlife artist Robert Bateman, Tiessen has exhibited his work since 2006 in over 100 exhibitions including the National Gallery of Canada, and is frequently juried into group exhibitions throughout the United States. He has sold upwards to 150 originals and hundreds of limited edition giclée prints to private/corporate Canadian and international collectors.

Featured over 200 times in the press & media (American Art Collector, International Artist), speaking and teaching at 60 venues, and making 90 invited art donations to charitable organizations, Tiessen established the Arts for a Change Foundation. In spite of early success, Tiessen humbly acknowledges that his artistic talent is a gift from God.

Josh will be attending virtually, but we will have his physical art pieces displayed in the gallery.

Timothy Leaven

Timothy Leaven takes after the sonic likes of acoustic-folk greats Jon Foreman, Nickel Creek, Keith and Kristyn Getty, and Andrew Peterson. A New-Hampshire-born singer-songwriter-producer, Tim creates music that is honest, kind, and beautiful. His work blends stories and melodies into unique snapshots of a world both intricate and expansive.

A die-hard DIY-er, Tim is also an amateur woodworker and watercolourist, part-time baker, hiker, and watcher of sunsets.

Abbey Sitterley

Abbey Sitterley is a singer-songwriter hailing from Rochester, NY. A writer by trade, her work is often inspired by classic literature, theology, and the tension between faith and doubt. Find her music here.

Making in Darkness, with David Kim. David Kim explores the process by which we can take the darkness we experience and allow God’s Spirit to lead us on an alternate pathway towards a vision of God’s glorious future.  During this time we will engage our imaginations as we take time to listen to what it means “to boldly approach the throne of grace.”

Becoming a Professional Artist while Keeping Your Faith (and Sanity!), with Josh Tiessen. Renowned painter Josh Tiessen (leading his breakout virtually from Canada) shares the practical side of making an art career, from a Christian perspective. How do we regularly produce quality work? How do we network or market ourselves to have our work seen and appreciated by others? Josh will answer our questions and provide encouragement to aspiring artists.

The Birds & The Bees: Pollination in an age of Politicization, with Joy Ike. In an era of political correctness, identity politics, and fear-based messaging, dealing in hope can feel daunting. What does cultural transformation look like in the middle of so much deterioration? If the Gospel is real and true, then surely there is a light at the end of this very long tunnel, right? Join Joy Ike as she shares reflections on how we can plant good seeds and watch them grow…how we can spread those wild (kingdom) oats and witness the abundant goodness of our God in the land of the living.

Songwriting: Befriending Revision and Re-Writing Your Way to Better Lyrics, with Timothy Leaven. “Most strong songs are not written. They are re-written.” How does one press into the songwriting process after the initial spark has faded? How does one know when lyrics are developed enough? What tools are worth having in one’s back pocket while revising? Timothy Leaven will share from his ten years as a songwriter and re-writer, with discussion and Q&A to follow.
